In the fashion world, each season brings a new “It” accessory that everyone is wearing. This New York Fashion Week, which starts February 9, it won’t be a bag or shoe, but a pink pin with an important purpose.
Today, the Council of Fashion Designers of America just announced a campaign supporting Planned Parenthood. They’ve distributed pins that read “Fashion Stands With Planned Parenthood” to designers, PR agencies, modeling agencies, influencers, fashion week locations, and press.
The plan is to have designers wear the pin on their final walk, place it on one or more models in the runway show, have all front row attendees wear them, and have everyone posting photos using the hashtag #IStandwithPP to raise awareness.
“We know that so many people stand with Planned Parenthood–including designers and entertainers–because they and their loved ones have relied on Planned Parenthood for health care, including life-saving care like cancer screenings, birth control, STI testing and treatment and sex education,” CFDA board member Tracy Reese shared in a statement, “By creating a visually engaging and fashionable pin, we hope to create an organic social media movement promoting awareness education.”
Forty designers and brands have already confirmed participation including Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Cushnie et Ochs, Public School, Jonathan Simkhai, Kate Spade New York, Rosetta Getty, Proenza Schouler, Mara Hoffman, Narciso Rodriguez, Milly, Prabal Gurung, Tory Burch, and Zac Posen.
Access to sexual and reproductive health rights have been under threat with Republicans’ push to defund Planned Parenthood. The pins will come with an info card that outlines actions to take to help protect Planned Parenthood’s services–which has provided 2.5 million patients with disease screenings, annual checkups, and contraception.
“We are truly thrilled by the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s show of support for Planned Parenthood at New York Fashion Week,” Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, said. “Planned Parenthood has stood defiantly in the face of opposition for a century, and we’re not backing down now.”
