Emma Stone Reacts to ‘Moonlight’ Win Over ‘La La Land’

In what will surely go down as one of the most shocking moments in Oscar history, bits and pieces of what on earth happened to allow Warren Beatty to read the wrong Best Picture Oscar winner are starting to emerge.

For starters, in the press room, Emma Stone, who won the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in La La Land, told reporters, “I was holding my best actress in a leading role card that entire time,” Stone told reporters backstage. “So I don’t mean to start stuff, but whatever story that was, I had that card. So I’m not sure what happened and I really wanted to talk to you guys first. Congratulations Moonlight.”

No one is quite sure what happened yet, as footage from the show reveals that Beatty was holding an envelope which read “Best Actress in a Leading Role.”

But Stone said she was thrilled to cede the win to Moonlight, Stone enthusiastically said, “I fucking love Moonlight. God I love Moonlight so much. I’m so excited for Moonlight. Of course you know it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land, I think we would have all loved to have won best picture but we are so excited for Moonlight, I think its one of the best films of all time so I was pretty beside myself.”

ELLE.com asked how everyone was faring after the huge mix-up. “I think everyone’s in a state of confusion still,” she said, “excitement but confusion.”
